Recently I came across the marvelous world of bamboo toothbrushes.
According to Wikipedia, one toothbrush manufacturing company in Britain manufactures 70 million toothbrushes a year. Plastic found in standard toothbrushes cannot be recycled. That means that every used and discarded plastic toothbrush ever made is sitting in a landfill somewhere, making the number of now useless toothbrushes astronomical. Obviously, this is not sustainable. Is there a solution?
Bamboo has become the natural wonder material of our age, so it’s not surprising that some companies have begun manufacturing bamboo toothbrushes. One company that particularly caught my attention is a South African company called Simply Bamboo and they have a beautiful, simple, yet effective webstore where they sell their South African designed bamboo toothbrushes with charcoal infused bristles.
Features of Bamboo Toothbrushes
One of the things that I particularly like about Simply Bamboo, is the company’s honesty. There are two choices in regards to bristles in toothbrushes; nylon or pig hair. Pig hair isn’t a solution because it is very cruel to the pig, so this company opted for Nylon and unlike unscrupulous companies, they have admitted this fact. The handle is made out of bamboo and can be composted. They suggest that once the toothbrush must be discarded, you remove the bristles with a pair of pliers and throw them in with your recycling.
Some other features of these toothbrushes are as follows:
- The bristles are secured in place by pressure, not glue, adding to the environmentally friendliness of this product.
- The bamboo handle is manufactured from a sustainable source of bamboo
- It has an ergonomically designed handle to sit comfortably in your grasp.
- The slim soft charcoal-infused bristles get into the hard to reach places between teeth
- Available in two sizes; adults and kids.
And they have an amazing photographer. If you can take a good photo of a toothbrush, you’re talented!
Charcoal Infused Bristles
I was very interested in the charcoal infused bristles found in these toothbrushes so emailed Simply Bamboo for further information on this.
Charcoal is naturally antimicrobial and helps keep odor-causing bacteria at bay. It also helps remove stains and plaque found on teeth. Simply Bamboo believe that the charcoal detoxes and cleanses the mouth.
Simply Bamboo’s aim is to help create a world without waste, starting with everyday items, such as toothbrushes. They hope that every home across the world will one day use sustainable toothbrushes of some sort.
